Zahid's reminder...

Yes, Umno needs to triple its efforts in reaching out to supporters. Dissension maybe 'small' as at now but the party must find the right remedy to all problems.

With a group of Umno 'political dropouts' and ex-leaders launching severe attacks on party president Najib Tun Razak, it needs more than what it takes to stiffle the furiousity.

Acting deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi holds the key as an arbitrator in solving it. Not easy but he has been quite 'comforting' by not being so personal about it. He subscribe to moderation.

Zahid has yesterday reminded Umno leaders and members to unite under the present leadership and not be easily sucked into agitating propaganda.

In welcoming rival Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) plans to form an opposition alliance, he said it is PAS’ democratic right to promote alternative ideologies through a new platform.

However, the move must not be at the expense of national unity.

“We need to bear in mind the importance of our unity and not tear down the unity that we share on the basis of (political) differences. But now, we have to work triple hard … we have to work harder than before,” he added, in acknowledging that the formation of the new pact would pose another challenge to UMNO.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said yesterday morning that his party will form a new opposition pact with an unnamed party ahead of the next General Election, which has to be called by 2018.

He said the Islamist party will soon sign a formal agreement with the partner to become what will be the third opposition pact in the country.

“This coming March 16, we will have a cooperation with a political party … PAS has its own opposition political bloc,” he told reporters.

Although he declined to identify the potential partner, Takiyuddin hinted that it was a registered multiracial political party.

He said the bloc could take in more members beyond just political parties, claiming that there was also interest from civil society.

“That is our plan. Not only one party, maybe a few more. We are quite big now, 1 million members. NGOs (non-governmental organisations) are also joining the pact,” said Takiyuddin.
