Today's nomination marks the start of campaign for the 13th general election. With 222 parliament and 505 state seats up for grab, the straight battle is between ruling BN and opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
The presence of about 60 Independents will also post some bearings on May 5 polling with few of them are expected to make it through.
BN are fielding more first timers in a 'deadly' mission to defend Putrajaya, the Federal administrative center that saw Husam Musa and Umno veteran 'Ku Nan' of Pas and BN respectively to outcast each other.
There are some surprises this time around when Umno dropped veterans like Nor Mohd Yakcop and Rais Yatim from its list.
Rais especially was the 'biggest shock' as nobody expected him to be axed as he gained the highest KPI rating. However, rumors are rife that Rais would be appointed an adviser to the Cabinet if BN wins.
'Battle of the giants' will definitely gain most attention from the media, including overseas.
The fight for Gelang Patah parliamentary seat between DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and outgoing Johor mentri besar Ghani Othman will also decide on their fate.
Kit Siang especially is in for a 'do or die mission. If he loses, that wiil be the endto his politis.
In Shah Alam, Khalid Samad of Pakatan is facing an uphill task to defend his seat when Independent Zulkifli Nord n takes him on one·to·one. Zul is contesting on BN ticket.
In Lembah Pantai, incumbent Nurul Izzah of Pakatan is also into a stiff competition with Federal minister Raja Nongchik. Some 'political bookies' are banking on Raja Nongchik to win it back for BN.
I hope the campaign which officially starts today will not be marred by any untoward incident as both sides have pledged to observe the ethic of political campaign.
