A fatwa is to be recognised and respected my all Muslims. However, there are 'Muslim liberals' who do not think so and challenge it.
Let's see if Sisters in Islam (SIS) who lambasted Selangor MB Azmin Ali a few days ago would like to challenge what His Majesty the Sultan of Selangor said:
SIS has then filed for a judicial review the gazetted fatwa (edict) in Selangor that declared the Muslim women’s rights group as deviating from Islam.
SIS executive director Ratna Osman said they only came across the fatwa by chance on Oct 20.
“We view with grave concern, the allegations made against us and question the basis of this fatwa,” she said.
SIS named the Selangor Fatwa Committee, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and the state government as respondents in the review filed Friday at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
The fatwa titled “Pemikiran Liberalisme dan Pluralisme Agama” declared SIS Forum (Malaysia) as subscribing to liberalism and religious pluralism, and therefore deviating from the teachings of Islam.
I believe they have grounds to challenge the edict...but will they go against the Sultan's words?

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has called on Muslims not to criticise fatwas without fully understanding their meaning. The SIS in a press conference earlier this week said it was not informed of a gazetted fatwa on July 31 banning the organisation for its 'deviation from Islam'.
He said a fatwa is made by professionals and endorsed by himself, adding that one should not comment about it before knowing what it is all about.
“If one does not understand the law, it can threaten the peace, harmony and safety of a country.
“I am saying this because I don’t want Muslims to fight with each other,” the ruler said in his speech before officiating the Syariah Criminal Code Seminar at the state secretariat building, Thursday.
