As an Opposition Leader, Anwar has been accusing the government of practicing nepotism and cronysim.
However, he has forgotten his 'wonderful era' as deputy prime minister and finance minister, before the Cabinet decided to sack him about 15 years ago.
Those with him in the Cabinet knew what he did back then. Many of his friends (and ex-friends) too, especially those who had flourished from his position. I think some people have the story but only a few would come forward.
One of them is former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin:
Anwar is never a sour grape. He is now more of a defeated general seeking revenge although he knows that he is not on the right footing...Tun Daim Zainuddin, the predecessor of Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Finance Ministry, said Anwar’s policies during his helm, which included giving away company shares, was the catalyst for the Malays’ lacklustre business performance.According to an interview by Berita Harian he said Anwar had enriched his allies when he was Finance Minister by giving them shares in companies.“This led them to think that it was easy to be rich and there was no need to be involved in business.“If you supported him (Finance Minister), you got shares, then you sold them and became rich.“This is partly why many Malays are no longer business-savvy. The mentality has stuck since then.”Daim said Malays had also lost the “culture to do business” after being colonised for more than 400 years.“The ones that invaded us also started from a company, the East India Company, where the British had encouraged Malays to stick to agriculture and fishing and not be involved in business.”He said only 1% of Malays had commercial land in the city.“This is worrying. Malays nowadays can’t afford to buy property in the city.“We give land to UDA (Urban Development Authority) and they sell it to Chinese businessmen.“Even for MRCB (Malaysian Resources Capital Bhd) that had developed KL Sentral, almost no Malay bought properties there.”Daim warned Malays that the situation here could mimic that of Singapore.“Just look at the Iskandar development, Penang and other places.“It is not only the Chinese, but even Malaysians that are losing out on these properties because they are in the millions.”
