KUALA LUMPUR: There have been at least two police reports lodged following the controversy surrounding the makeshift canteen in Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Pristana Sg Buloh.
The controversy began on Tuesday when photographs of non-Muslim kids eating in a changing room during the fasting month were published on Facebook.
The blame game is on as of who had turned it into a racial/religious issue and the jury is still out there, divided on their assessment.
However, if the content of a postbook posting were to be taken as the starting point of the whole issue, then the racial/religious elements were of essence from the word go, whether by chance or by design.
Following is the chronology of the controversy:
Jul 23:
A Facebook user known as Guneswari Kelly (purportedly the parent of a student) posted10 photos of non-Muslim students eating in a changing room.
Together with the published photos Guneswari among others commented: “Is it fair for a sekolah kebangsaan sri pristana treatment for our non-Muslim children like this during puasa month.”
Guneswari also said: “My dear Malay friends do you think this fair? Can ur Allah accept this? Making our children in suffers. This wat 1Malaysia is it????”
The post received more than 600 comments and close to four thousand shares on Facebook.
One of the photos was posted on Twitter by a user known as TheMamuRises.
By now, the changing room have become toilets as reflected in the post that stated that the school had asked non-Muslim students to eat in the toilet. It went viral on the social media website with 727 retweets (re-posts).
Responding to the post, a Twitter user known as Syamsul Azuar wrote: “Pristana Sg Buloh? OMG! Kesian gile kat budak budak tu. Maybe boleh sediakan ruang dalam kantin tu ke.” (Pristana Sg Buloh? OMG! Pity those kids. Maybe a space should be provided in the canteen).
Another Twitter user known as Fadiah Nadwa Fikri commented: “Pelajar bukan Islam diarah makan di dalam tandas di bulan Ramadhan.Kegilaan apakah ini?Agama versi apa yang manusia zalim ini percaya?” (Non- Muslim students asked to eat in the toilet in the month of Ramadan. What craziness is this? Which version of religion does this cruel man believe?)
Enter the pro-opposition news portal Malaysiakini published an article about the controversy with headline: “Non-Muslim students forced to eat in shower room.”
A blog post at Ameno World also published the photos of the changing room and asked for an investigation before any conclusion and decision is made.
The Mole reported Deputy Minister (II) P.Kamalanathan as saying that it is totally unacceptable for the school administrators to force non-Muslim pupils to eat in the changing room during the fasting month.
Opposition MP Rafizi Ramli wrote in his Twitter post that whether the room is a toilet or changing room, there is no reason for students to eat there. He said the school could have set up a tent for students to eat.
