What can we say...

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir has often found fault with world leaders and business moguls but perhaps he may have met his match in the Sultan of Johor, according to reports.

Last month, Mahathir had provoked the Johor monarch when he publicly critised the Johor Royal House for encouraging its subjects to uphold its tradition of uniting the people through the ‘Bangsa Johor’ concept.

The Johor sultan had labelled the former prime minister as ignorant and asked him to shut up.

Sultan Ibrahim appears to have not forgotten Mahathir’s accusation when he addressed the gathering of Johor Chinese community leaders during a tea ceremony held at “Dewan Cina” (Chinese Hall) in the Abu Bakar Royal Museum within the grounds of royal palace in Johor Bahru yesterday.

“Maybe there are politicians outside of Johor who are jealous of the ‘Bangsa Johor’ concept and said it would lead to divisions

“Let us ignore the old man who has apparently gone crazy,” Sultan Ibrahim had made references to the incident last month although he did not specifically put a name to the individual.

Local online news portal Malaysiakini had recorded the speech with the video of the recording being posted to Youtube.

The sultan had earlier rebuked Mahathir for again trying to divide the Malay community by introducing another race-based politicial party while the Johor Royal House was constantly looking at ways to unite the state’s people without regard to race.

In the tea ceremony yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim acknowledged the Chinese community’s contribution to the state since arriving from mainland China over 200 years ago, pointing out that the community had helped develop Johor together with the Malays and Indians.

“In 1875, the Chinese “kapitans” (“Kapitan Cina” – a title given to Johor Chinese community leaders) presented the “Dewan Cina” to Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar, as a gesture of their appreciation and loyalty to the Ruler.

“This was also in recognition of the fact that Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar had the peoples’ interests at heart and had ruled Johor fairly to ensure peace and prosperity,” Sultan Ibrahim has noted in a Facebook posting yesterday about the get together with the Johor Chinese community.

NOTE: I was sad when Tun left Umno, and couldn't believe it when he initiated a new party to oust not only PM Najib but also Umno. However, he is still our senior statesman and will remain so. 'Insane' (to me) was a bit harsh but when it comes from a sultan, I think I can't say anything. In 'kesultanan Melayu', we are just his subjects...
