Rafizi Ramli was courting arrest, and he finally got it. In the eyes of the opposition and critics, the government is bad for trying to stifle dissensions, and of course the police comes under a bad spotlight.
However, it was a well-planned strategy by the opposition. Besides telling the world about how bad the situation in Malaysia is, it will be used to distract Sarawakians from choosing Barisan Nasional in the state election in early May.
Don't you see that? However, (as usual) we need to be firm and strict about it.
The Pandan MP was arrested by the police in front of the Parliament gate yesterday. The PKR secretary-general was taken into a police car as he was exiting the Parliament building at around 6pm.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the arrest on Twitter. His tweet read that Rafizi was arrested outside of the Parliament building, and will be investigated under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
It was believed that Rafizi was brought to Bukit Aman.
Rafizi had in a press conference at Parliament revealed a document stamped "OSA", linking misappropriation allegations to the troubled firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin, who was at the scene during the incident, said there were around 15 police personnel waiting in front of the gate at the time when Rafizi was arrested.
He said there were two to three police cars on standby, adding that the police refused to provide an explanation for the arrest.
In a press conference later held by several opposition MPs at Parliament lobby, PKR's Datuk Johari Abdul said he was shocked to hear the news of the arrest. He added that the manner of which Rafizi was arrested was not according to proper conduct.
"He (Rafizi) has said to the police that he is willing to work together (with the police), whether to provide statement or being investigated," he said.
