His patience seemingly worn thin, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak returned the volley today against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has teamed up with the opposition to launch a campaign against his leadership.

“I am not surprised that this happens now because even when Tun was PM, there were many accusations against him, like Mahazalim, Mahafiraun and so on. But now, they look happy to be sitting together,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat, referring to Dr Mahathir by his title.

Najib was responding to the “Save Malaysia” movement led by the 90-year-old in response to a question from Ketereh MP Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

The Malay words “Mahazalim” and “Mahafiraun” mean cruellest and dictator respectively.

Najib also gave an assurance that his administration is still focused on taking Malaysia forward despite criticisms.

“My friends in the administration and I as the PM are still steadfast and focused despite the attacks.

“We have not lost our direction or focus. We are still committed in implementing our plan,” he said.

Najib said his administration’s plan has received international recognition and added that Malaysians will, in the long run, appreciate what Putrajaya has done for them.

Najib has been under criticism from the opposition as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir for his handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad and a RM2.6 billion political donation.

Dr Mahathir has teamed up with various leaders from the opposition including DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and civil society leaders like Bersih 2.0’s Maria Chin Abdullah to sign a declaration calling for Najib to step down.
