DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang labels BN senators 'actors' for letting the Dewan Negara passed the National Security Council (NSC) Bill yesterday although some of them, had during its debate, voiced out that the bill needed some 'adjustments'.
Tormented and frustrated, Lim threw his tantrum at them by questioning their motive in showing some objections to the bill.
Well, if the BN senators are actors, Lim himself is a bad director.
His script went wrong and against the actors' common plot - to draw a good plan for national security, and for the safety of the rakyat.
Lim - in serving his 6-month suspension from the Parliament - has put up his best to jettison the bill, which he and members of the Opposition have been politicizing it by saying it would give absolute power to the prime minister to apprehend anybody deemed as posing threat to the country.
They also claimed that the bill would strip off His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong's power in declaring (if the need arises) a state of emergency, and also as the government's tool to stifle its critics.
Kit Siang said today it was hard to understand how some Barisan Nasional (BN) senators could speak with such conviction against the National Security Council (NSC) Bill but in the same breath appeared so meek and tame when it was time to vote the law through.
In a statement, the DAP lawmaker said the Dewan Negara's easy approval of the NSC Bill yesterday proved that the upper house of Parliament was just as much of a “rubber stamp” as the Dewan Rakyat, despite the criticisms against the proposed security law raised earlier by these BN senators.
“The outspoken BN Senators have adopted 'lock, stock and barrel' all the objections to the Bill from the constitutional, democracy and human rights aspects which have been articulated by Opposition Members of Parliament and civil society leaders, but this has not prevented the BN Senators from submissively voting for the NSC Bill at the end of the debate.
“Are the BN Senators such great actors or pretenders?” Lim asked in a statement.
The Gelang Patah MP noted that when the Bill was being debated yesterday, some in Umno attacked him for asking if the criticism by BN representatives against the Bill was genuine or a mere parliamentary charade.
“They claimed that they 'spoke from the heart'. If so, they had not voted in accordance with the wishes of their heart and none of them seem to be heartbroken!” Lim said.
Well, Lim has failed just like when he opposed POTA and SOSMA. But I personally believe he will keep on trying.
Why? Because he and the Opposition take all security laws as 'oppressive'!
