Sounds familiar with Malaysia’sSecurityOffences(SpecialMeasures)Act(Sosma)andPreventionof
Terrorism Act (POTA)?
Other countries have similar terror laws to help curb terror attacks against its citizens andnationalinterestbothathomeandabroad.Forexample, theUnitedStateshas the Patriot Act, the UK Anti-Crime, TerrorismandSecurityAct2001 and Canada Anti-TerrorismAct2001.
RepublicanUSPresidentialfrontrunnercandidateDonald Trump even wants to ban Muslims from entering the US!
ButwhydoesMalaysiagetcriticizedwhenitpassesterrorlawstoprotectits citizens? Have we forgotten the incidents at Lahad Datu and Kampung Sauk as well as the kidnappings of Malaysians and tourists along Sabah east coast?
Malaysia’sNationalSecurityCouncilBillwhichwaspassedbytheDewanRakyat earlierthismonthhas comeunderattacksbyoppositionpartiesandcivilliberty groups, whichtheyclaimedconfersandconcentratesvastexecutivepowersina newly created statutory body called the National Security Council (“NSC”).
Deputy PrimeMinister ZahidHamidi has defended theNSC bill whichwasapprovedbyParliament.Hesaidithadnopoliticalmotiveorgave absolute power to the Prime Minister.
Zahid who is also Home Minister saidthebill wasto strengthenenforcementincomprehensivelylookingafterthesecurityofthepeople in the country.
"The unhappiness of some individuals and non-governmental organisations (over the matter) should be looked at but the parties concerned too should read what is implicit in the act, wherebypower is not given absolutely to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Defence Minister,Home Minister, Communications andMultimedia Minister or other ministers connected with the issue of security."Instead, thepowerisgiventothecouncil, namely, abodywhichdoesnotabuse power. Meaning, the full executive power is not with the PM but with this body as had beendonebeforewithPreventionofCrimeAct2013(POCA)andPreventionof Terrorism Act 2015 (POTA). This must be understood."
Lest the critics forget, the threat posed by Sultan Sulu Army, Al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Jemaah Islamiyah and other off-shoot terror groups are real.

It takes just one 'crazy' or 'fanatic' mind to start terrorizing the country. If NSC critics prefer to see it happens first before we are allowed to enforce such a strict law, may as well we leave the country in the hands of the devils!
