Umno president Najib Tun Razak shook hands with his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin after delivering his winding-up speech at the party's general assembly but would not comment on what would transpire after this.
Najib said the message from the assembly was clear, that members "want see an end to the infighting in the party."
"This is not my personal wish as president. It is the wish of the AGM, which is the highest authority in the party. The message is that they want the leadership to patch up the rift," Najib told reporters later.
Najib said he shook hands with Muhyiddin after delivering his speech, although no words were exchanged between the two.
Asked what was next for the party, Najib replied: "That's up to them. The message is clear" in reference to Muhyiddin and vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, two of his fiercest critics on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd and RM2.9bil political donation.
Najib earlier told the delegates that he was extending an olive branch to his detractors in Umno, indicating that he was ready to set aside differences for the unity of the party.
Najib repeated what he said during his policy speech on Thursday, that he chose to remain "big-hearted".
It is understood that the olive branch extended by Najib was meant for the duo, who have spoken out publicly against the Prime Minister's leadership in recent months.
Najib, however, issued a stern warning that he would no longer remain magnanimous if certain parties continued to attempt to sow the seeds of discord within the party.
"Be warned, if after this AGM, there are those who still seek to break the party apart, they would have put an end to all hope of reconciliation," he said.
Muhyiddin said earlier that he will not apologise to anyone as he felt his statements are in line with the party's struggles.
Speaking to reporters, Muhyiddin said he loved the party and its members and he need not apologise for his actions.
"There is no valid reason for me to apologise. Whatever, I said was not a personal attack.
"All my statements are about the party's leadership and principles. I don't think they contravene the purpose and spirit of Umno struggles," he said.
