UPDATE: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has pledged stern action against those who accused him of wanting to close down social media...read here

EARLIER POST:
I don't remember Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said anything about closing all social websites on the Internet, let alone giving a date for such an action!

If 'Harian Metro' failed to check its sources, then its joining the likes of Sarawak Report, The Edge, The Malaysian Insider, The Malaysia Chronicle and other pro-opposition news portal by publishing an unsubstantiated material like this.

Even if the government wants to do so, it has to get consent from various authorities - the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the Attorney-General Chamber (AGC), Bukit Aman and others.

And to regulate it will take some times. However, I don't think the government will resort to such an approach in dealing with lies and slanders on the Internet.

I don't know how Harian Metro got the story because as far as the Deputy Prime Minister is concern, he had never said it, not to any news organisation. The Home Ministry under Zahid has to come up with a denial while Harian Metro too must rubbish it if its not their doing.

NOTE: I believe its not the actual Harian Metro but the work of some irresponsible parties. However, Metro editors must come up with a denial if its NOT theirs.
