I personally would like to congratulate Steven Thiru for being elected the Bar Council's new president yesterday.

I also hope he is able to 'clean up' the mess in the Council and uplift its image that has been plagued with bad labels such as 'pro-Opposition' and 'anti-government'.

In his maiden speech, Steven said:
“The Bar is not pro-opposition or pro-government. It is pro-justice and pro-rule of law. We will not allow the Bar to be polarised....we always uphold the Federal Constitution...Islam as the official religion and the rights of others to practice their religions...We are issue-based, and not race, religion and not political as accused by our detractors.”
Well said, bro. Mind me asking - did you take part in Bersih rallies?

However, do not 'tiru' others, especially some of the former presidents (except Ragunath Kesavan who is deemed as the best for his moderate approach).

Steven Thiru was elected the new president of the Bar Council today, succeeding Christopher Leong, who has served the maximum two terms as president.

George Varghese, a former Bar secretary, was voted vice-president, succeeding Thiru. The new secretary is Karen Cheah, with Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor, former Penang Bar chairman, succeeding her as treasurer.

They were elected from among 38 members of the council.

A record turnout of 1,906 members attended today’s annual meeting, of which 11 motions were tabled, among them was one to censure Christopher Leong for remarks he made about the judgement in the Anwar Ibrahim case, and another to revoke a Bar resolution calling for the abolition of the Sedition Act. Both were soundly defeated.

Selamat bertugas, Steven!
